These small but very effective knives are mostly used in the compounding process in the area of plastic treatment. They often have form of a spatula therefore often are called spatula knife. The compounding process where this kind of knives are required, is done in so called extruders or also twin-screw extruders, where a rotating granulating knife cuts the plastic rope of the nozzle. Through the water added during the cut-off it is ensured that the material doesn’t stick and can be further processed as granulate. The hot cropping knives make sure that a determined grain size is maintained.
In the area of manufacturing spatula knives the most different materials are used because they have to meet the most different requirements depending on its use. Very often the stress on the single knife is very strong which makes spring steel an optimum solution, while in other cases a tool steel can be used in order to increase the endurance of the granulating knife and to enlarge the intervals of the knife change.
